Richard became a member of the Dublin Painting and Sketching Club in 1980 and was invited to become a committee member three years later. He stayed on until he retired in 2006.
He studied painting at the Kenneth Webb ‘Blue Door’Studio. Originally he painted in oils and his tutors were Clare Cryan and Anne Tallentire. Some years later he changed to watercolours and stayed with it enjoying the fluidity of the medium nad the challenges it presents. His favourite locations continue to be the glorious Wicklow mountains with their constantly changing moods and colour. He is also inspired by the lushness of the West Cork landscape with its magical estuaries and inlets. The tranquil lakes of the West of Ireland continue to be inspirational to him. He likes to use strong colours in his watercolours and enjoys the medium which he finds challenging, if at times daunting.
