Early Morning Dublin Port – Dave West
During days of plein air painting, in and around Dublin Port, Dave West saw that the area’s defining characteristic is constant change.
Movement of the tides and the light and the ships leaves little that is static. And neither Nature nor the Dublin Port authority provide a Pause-button.
So, how to capture the moment? Dave resorted to the time-honoured solution of reworking his plein air sketches in the studio. He quickly decided that pastel was the obvious medium, best suited to capturing the indistinct shapes and atmospheric effects.
By opting for a wide composition he achieved a beautiful integration of all the picture elements, transient and permanent.
