David developed an interest in painting as a child, and has continued painting throughout most of his life. His first teacher was Maud Bennett who lived on Hop Island in the Lee estuary in Cork.  The Belfast portrait painter and muralist Sidney Smith was David’s uncle. He introduced him to Peter John Garrard PRBA, who became an important mentor and influence, though sadly when Peter became ill, study with him ceased.

For a number of years David, also, enjoyed the company and valuable critiques from Thomas Ryan PRHA.  He has travelled and painted extensively, and enjoyed various residencies both here and abroad. His interest is mostly in Plein Aire. He believes that the big society exhibitions and galleries are turning away from this great genre.

David has exhibited widely, more    recently in 2015-2016 with The United Artists, London, at the Bankside Gallery and Plein Aire Berlin-Brandenburg where he won 1st Prize for interpretation of landscape. In 2014 he exhibited “Jerusalem” at Eytz Chaim Gallery, London and was an invited artist at RHA Summer Exhibition.

His paintings are in number of collections at home and abroad including: Arts Council, Northern Ireland, Boston Public Library, USA, Bank of Ireland, Boston, Crawford Municipal Gallery, Cork and University College Dublin.

In addition to his membership of the DPS Club, David is an Associate Member of United Society of Artists, London
