Old Dublin Port – Billy Moore

One fine day, thirty years ago, Billy Moore walked along the Liffey Quays. He paused to stare at the Gasometer and the Edwardian houses still standing in its shadow. The redbrick dwellings looked incredibly fragile beneath the menace of the vast industrial cylinder.

He took time out to make a drawing of the scene in his sketchpad.

Recently, as we began work on the Port theme for our 2019 Exhibition, Billy remembered that sketch. He found it… and it became the basis for a new painting.

The passing of years has added significance to the original concept and deepened its feeling of nostalgia
